A pre-university student of St Aloysius Mangalore, Devi Prasad Shetty had his professional education and was trained in general surgery from the Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore (1982). He further had his training in Cardiac Surgery at the West Midlands Cardiothoracic Rotation programme. He later did his appointment at the Guy’s Hospital London – Cardiothoracic Unit, between 1983 and 1989. In 1989, Dr Shetty and his team opened a 140-bed hospital Research Institute in Calcutta. In 1997, he and his team set up the Manipal Heart Foundation – a 450-bed heart operation facility. A recent addition to his list of accomplishments is the Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences, a full-fledged cardiac hospital built on 5 acres of land in Calcutta.

Dr Shetty’s dream is to make cardiac surgery reasonable and affordable, by creating a chain of heart hospitals in every state in India, where more and more children are treated. A few years ago, Dr Shetty recalls, when the Blessed Mother Teresa suffered a heart attack Dr Shetty was put in charge of her heart care. One day, Mother, who at that point of time was convalescing in the intensive care unit of the hospital, saw Dr Shetty examining a blue baby. After a few minutes of thought she turned towards him and said; “Now I know why you are here. To relieve the agony of children with heart disease, God sent you to this world to fix it”. Dr Shetty claims, this is the best definition ever given of a paediatric cardiac surgeon and perhaps the best compliment that he has ever received.

When you do your work without expecting anything in return, just for the joy of brining happiness to others, that’s when you’ll realize it is not your hands, which do the job, it is the hands of God, he states.

Dr Shetty wants to associate with people with love and compassion. 50 Year-old handsome looking Dr Shetty is a proud Mangalorean who is such a great personality in the medical field.

Education and Qualification:

  • MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore
  • MS (General Surgery) from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore
  • Trained in Cardiac Surgery at West Midlands Cardio-Thoracic Rotation Program between Walsgrave Hospital, Coventry and East Birmingham Hospital, Birmingham followed by appointment at Cardio-Thoracic unit, Guys Hospital, London from 1983 to 1989

  • Professor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka, Bangalore

Contribution to Cardiac surgery

In 1990, Dr. Shetty became the first surgeon in India to venture into Neonatal open heart surgery by performing open-heart surgery on a 9-day-old baby.

He performed Asia’s first dynamic cardio-myoplasty operation to strengthen the weak heart muscle using the chest wall muscle.

For the first time in India, he used a left ventricular assist device to temporarily support a failing heart.
He is one of the few surgeons in the world to use a microchip camera to perform keyhole heart surgery.
He has one of the largest experiences in the world in performing bypass-grafting operation on a beating heart.
Dr. Shetty and his team made Narayana Hrudayalaya a post graduate training institute by conducting various training programs to train adult and paediatric cardiologists and surgeons along with cardiac anaesthetists and inten

After 6 months of offering stem cell therapy in combination with the venous angioplasty liberation procedure, patients of CCSVI Clinic have reported excellent health outcomes. Ms. Kasma Gianopoulos of Athens Greece, who was diagnosed with the Relapsing/Remitting form of MS in 1997 called the combination of treatments a “cure”. “I feel I am completely cured” says Ms. Gianopoulos, “my symptoms have disappeared and I have a recovery of many functions, notably my balance and my muscle strength is all coming (back). Even after six months, I feel like there are good changes happening almost every day. Before, my biggest fear was that the changes wouldn’t (hold). I don’t even worry about having a relapse anymore. I’m looking forward to a normal life with my family. I think I would call that a miracle.”

Other recent MS patients who have had Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (ASCT), or stem cell therapy have posted videos and comments on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFQr2eqm3Cg.

Dr. Avneesh Gupte, the Neurosurgeon at Noble Hospital performing the procedure has been encouraged by results in Cerebral Palsy patients as well. “We are fortunate to be able to offer the treatment because not every hospital is able to perform these types of transplants. You must have the specialized medical equipment and specially trained doctors and nurses”.  With regard to MS patients, “We are cautious, but nevertheless excited by what patients are telling us. Suffice to say that the few patients who have had the therapy through us are noticing recovery of neuro deficits beyond what the venous angioplasty only should account for”.

Dr. Unmesh of Noble continues: “These are early days and certainly all evidence that the combination of liberation and stem cell therapies working together at this point is anecdotal. However I am not aware of other medical facilities in the world that offer the synthesis of both to MS patients on an approved basis and it is indeed a rare opportunity for MS patients to take advantage of a treatment that is quite possibly unique in the world”.

Autologous stem cell transplantation is a procedure by which blood-forming stem cells are removed, and later injected back into the patient. All stem cells are taken from the patient themselves and cultured for later injection. In the case of a bone marrow transplant, the HSC are typically removed from the Pelvis through a large needle that can reach into the bone. The technique is referred to as a bone marrow harvest and is performed under a general anesthesia. The incidence of patients experiencing rejection is rare due to the donor and recipient being the same individual. This remains the only approved method of the SCT therapy. To: Prof. Deviprasad Shetty, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, India.

Dear Sir, We are located in Afghanistan, My father, Dr. Abdul Hadi, has TripleVessel Coronary Artery Disease (Blockage) of about 80 – 90%, he isabout 55 years old and the doctors in Pakistan advised him CABGoperation, but he has a childhood Venous Malformation (Hemangioma) inhis Tongue, Laryngeal – Pharynx,Left Check, Neck and Left Upper Mediastinum as well, and for this Hemangioma he has done several procedures of treatment in Taiwan and Germany (Laser Therapy and Blomycin injection of Tongue), in the result the Hemangioma decreased by about 70%.

Without the above mentioned disease, he is non diabetic, non alcoholic non smoker, with normal blood pressure and physically fit. So the doctors in Pakistan are ready to perform his Open Heart surgerybut they somewhat fear from the bleeding of the lesion if it comesacross their way of operation.
As we were informed of your unique kind of operation for CABG. It gave us hope and great pleasure. So please consider our case and inform us soon in order to come there to your hospital for his CABG.
Enclosed, please find his attached Medical Investigations for your kind attention and if you need further information please contact us.  Your assistance in this regard will be a great assistance for us, willbe highly appreciated and will remind us of your great affective. With Best Regards, Abdul Ahad s/o Dr. Abdul HadiKandahar City, Afghanistan.ahadafghan@gmail.comMobile: 0092 3368068568

    Dear Sir,

My nephew is currently undergoing a fontan procedure and is currently experiencing serious complications. I am trying to find the leading consultant in the field of congenital heart defect, in the hope I would be able to discuss and find solutions to his complications. I am concerned his current consultant seems baffled and wondered if you would be able to help.

He recently suffered a cardiac arrest, hence my desperation to find solutions fast.

    Kind Regards,
